A Fresh Coat of Paint

When I moved into my current house, four years ago, I was still riding the remodeling high I had been on for 6 months.  My cousin and I had torn up my old home – refinishing the hard wood floors, previously covered by wall-to-wall carpet, remodeling the kitchen, etc.  The living room, dining room and bathroom were freshly decorated, thanks to the show “Designed to Sell.”*   I sold the house within a week of its being listed.  It was awesome to finally have a perfect house, but I only enjoyed it for 2 weeks due to the closing date and business travel.

So, I moved into my “new” house with yet another outdated kitchen and white walls in every room.  I was NOT going to live in a house for another 8 years in these conditions.  I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.  To save money on the kitchen remodel, I did all of the painting and cabinet refinishing.  I painted the living room, dining room, den and bathroom; however, at some point pure exhaustion or a need to just unpack my life and be settled took over.  The two bedrooms and hallway were left as they were – dull apartment white with roll-up shades.

I always intended to get the rooms painted.  For four years, there has always been an excuse or an obstacle to overcome.  The biggest one for me was a large California King bed in the guest bedroom.  The bed would have to be moved and there was no way I could move it on my own.

I had wanted to get rid of this huge bed for quite a while, but the right person had not come along.  Finally, I heard the magical words I had been longing for from a good friend.  Her son had just moved back from New York City and didn’t even have a bed.

Within a week, the bed is gone and the rooms are painted – a warm butter yellow (guest room) and a relaxing sea foam green (my room).  I did not do the painting, myself.  I hired someone before I could put up new obstacles that would prevent me from getting it done.

Really the ease of getting this project done, by just hiring someone, has inspired me.  I’m clearing out the old and making way for the new, in all aspects of my life.  A bit of “Spring Cleaning” perfectly timed with the season.

What obstacles are preventing you from getting what you want, done?  How can you move or circumvent those obstacles to go forward in your own personal journey?

*Occasionally my episode of “Designed to Sell” reruns.  Look for it on HGTV.

    Hi Heather,

Hiring someone else to do the work is good for the economy. Spend locally. Tomorrow a local landscape designer is starting work on my property. The front, side and back yards are all being redone. This is the first time in my life that I have hired someone to do a project of this magnitude. I am looking forward to three weeks from now when the project will be completed.

    Susan

Yes, Susan, you are right. Hiring someone is good for the economy. Send pictures of your newly landscaped garden.

    Noel, good luck!

This reminds me of good Feng Shui principles: get rid of what does not serve you; bring in what nurtures and stimulates you.
This article reminds me to get at the clutter in my office or I’ll keep being distracted by what I don’t want. Thanks for your good words!
